Dance Artistry

Dance is a precious form of communication. What began as a hobby to refine Sonya's understanding of what her body has to say has since flourished into a collaborative choreographic practice bolstered by training in ballet, modern, contemporary, musical theatre, and hip hop. After self choreographed lyrical solos were met with success in local competitions as a teenager, Sonya was encouraged to further explore the medium as it relates to diversity in physical ability, size, and scope. She would go on to study and craft in Boston, Denver, and New York, co-choreographing, performing in, and presenting Shoes Off: A Movement Piece in Boston, before dancing with Spoke N Motion Dance in Denver. As a student in Purchase College, SUNY’s Arts Management program, Sonya choreographed, produced, and performed in a six piece contemporary dance production called This Body’s Heart. In conjunction with the production, she researched the application of Disability Justice principles to dance processes, and subsequently wrote This Body’s Heart: Leveraging Dance Processes for Cultural Liberation. Notably, She has worked with Full Radius Dance and Dance/NYC, and looks ahead to being a 2022 AXIS Dance Company Choreo-Lab Fellow made possible with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
