Sonya learned the power of finding community through shared experience at a young age, and has since committed herself to sharing works of non-fiction to stand in solidarity with similarly marginalized populations, while simultaneously educating majority populations. Her writing has been published on a wide variety of platforms. A founding writer for COLAGE’s Kidsafe Blog, she shared her experience on growing up with queer parents from 2013-2015, before beginning her own blog, Where She Stands, in 2018, where she writes and educates on issues pertaining to disabled and queer experience. In 2017, Sonya was a contributing writer for Phamaly Theatre Company’s Vox: Under Construction, in collaboration with the Community College of Aurora. Also for the stage, Sonya was a contributing writer for Your Faithful Reader at Triskelion Arts in 2019. Also in 2019, an essay of hers was published in Families in Transition: Parenting Gender Diverse Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults. Recently, her piece Already Home was published in Issue 17 of the Italics Mine Literary Magazine. Listen and rad the transcript here. The Journalists Theatre Company presents Sounds From an Empty City, an audio anthology series of devised, semi-immersive experiences. In H.A.N.N.A.H. by TechFind: the future of home living, one family wins the opportunity to beta test this incredible new AI-based home accessibility system for their daughter with cerebral palsy. In collaboration with The Journalist's ensemble, Sonya wrote and voiced the character of Molly, invoking her experiences navigating disability and interdependence to breathe life into a woman caught at the crossroads of tech and disability.
The graphic for Phamaly Theatre Company’s CoronaVox: Stories To The Front- three cartoon figures wearing masks in blue, green, and orange, respectively, stand in front of a purple cartoon mountain range. In the foreground is a white banner with the title of show in black text.

"In the style of Phamaly’s past “Vox Phamalia” programs, CoronaVox: Stories from the Front will be a compilation of theatrical pieces created by Phamaly writers and actors, and based on fellow community members and their unique experiences during COVID-19, particularly “essential workers” who have been the unsung heroes of the pandemic: a health care worker, custodian, public safety officer, food preparer, caregiver, and more. In classic Phamaly fashion, the stories will come to life with vitality, respect, humor, and heart, demonstrating that even during the darkest of times, we can find light in human connection and storytelling. CoronaVox was presented virtually in May, 2021.”

“Italics Mine showcases the new, creative literary voices of Purchase College students—majors and non-majors alike—through print and web. The diversity of the student population is reflected in the pieces we strive to share with the entire college community.” In her piece Already Home in Issue 17, Sonya reflects of what does- and does not- constitute “home” Read the full piece.
The cover image of Issue 17 of Italics Mine Literary Magazine- A person’s outstretched hand holds a peach cut in half, exposing the dark red pit, The arm is in front of their legs which don light blue jeans. The figure with the peach is in front of a solid mauve background with the words “Italics Mine” in a loopy black script in the upper right corner.
The cover of “Families in Transition: Parenting Gender Diverse Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults

“Families in Transition: Parenting Gender Diverse Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults" is a compilation of clinically oriented articles, research, and case material authored by mental health and medical experts, both nationally and internationally known, as well as first-person narratives written by parents and families.” In her essay, Sonya recounts the experience of watching and supporting her twin as they came out and grew into their identity as a trans/non-binary individual. “Developed by writer and performer Miriam Wasmund, Your Faithful Reader merges the worlds of acting and dance with real letters.” Sonya’s writing a reflection on the experiences of surviving childhood bullying and subsequently growing into a multi-dimensional adult, was portrayed by actress Yael Rozowy.
A white playbill lies on a wooden table. At top, center, is the word PLAYBILL in black and white block lettering. Underneath is the title “Your Faithful Reader” in italicized white script against a charcoal background with light pink flowers. In the bottom third of the page is simple black text that reads “Written by many Curated and Choreographed by Miriam Wasmund/Stage Managed by Morgan Kimer/Presented by Triskelion Arts.”
VOX: Under Construction is in large white and read text on an angle in front of a mustard yellow background. Above the title is smallblack text that reads “Presented by CCA’s Theatre Department and Phamaly Theatre Company.” Below the title is unintelligible vlack text presumably describing the show, and underneath that description are three graphics of red construction signs, also on an angle. One has braille on it, another has a symbol of a wheelchair user with flames coming out the back of the wheels, and the third has has hands making the American Sign Language sign for ‘sign.

“We’re all works in progress. Phamaly and CCA actors collaborated  to explore the road maps of our lives and voices, challenging the very construct of 'disability.'” Sonya’s original piece, Flower Troubles, provides audiences with an intimate glimpse into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
